Forgotten Tales: The Warmth of Kangri

Nestled between the majestic Himalayas lies Kashmir, a land steeped in rich cultural heritage. Each season unfolds a unique story, and woven into the fabric of winter life is the Kangri, a humble earthen pot filled with burning embers, offering warmth and comfort amidst the biting cold. Today, we delve into the forgotten tale of the Kangri, and how Studio Kilab has reimagined its essence in the Kangri Kursi, a modern ode to a timeless tradition.

The Indispensable Kangri:

For centuries, the Kangri has been more than just a source of warmth; it’s a companion, a silent witness to daily life. Tucked under shawls or held close to the body, it provided respite from the harsh winters, fueling long hours of work and enriching conversations around crackling fireplaces. The choice of fuel, often walnut shells or dried apricot pits, added a subtle fragrance to the air, creating a sensory experience unique to Kashmir.

Beyond Warmth, a Cultural Symbol:

The Kangri transcended its practical purpose, becoming a symbol of resilience and resourcefulness. It fostered a sense of community, shared between generations and across social strata. Artisans crafted intricate covers for the Kangri, expressing their creativity and adding a touch of beauty to the everyday. Sadly, with changing lifestyles and the availability of modern heating solutions, the Kangri’s presence has dwindled.

Rekindling the Flame: The Kangri Kursi by Studio Kilab:

Recognizing the significance of the Kangri, Studio Kilab embarked on a mission to rekindle its warmth in a contemporary form. Enter the Kangri Kursi, a handwoven willow chair inspired by the shape and spirit of the traditional Kangri. Crafted from sustainable Kashmiri willow, the chair embodies the values of heritage and resourcefulness. Its curved base resembles the earthen pot, cradling the user in a warm embrace.

Weaving the Past into the Present:

Studio Kilab’s Kangri Kursi is a testament to the power of design to bridge the gap between tradition and innovation. It serves as a reminder of the values embedded in the Kangri: community, resilience, and resourcefulness. As we move forward, let us celebrate these forgotten tales, drawing inspiration from the past to create a future that cherishes its roots.
